Since Bertolucci is an Italian director obviously he has been influenced by French New Wave, so this film has that new wave soul, free flow of incidents instead of a fixed plot. This movie had a lot references of other movies especially French ones. The other things I noticed Isabelle and Thoe were upper class and and they were kind of misfit for an average youth. He knew that moment when Isabelle chose to participate in violence, that the twins were on the edge, and were beyond the line to be saved. He realizes it at the end, just leaves them like that, the twins will become just a interesting memory for him. Matthew was their muse, they found him interesting, and he found them the same way but the thing is when he tries to fix things it doesn't work, he can't fix their flaws, problems, save them from violence, harsh reality, and make them live in that happy bubble forever. It's like no one would get her the way Theo does, that's why she chose her brother and joined the riot at the end.īecause she was living in a bubble with the other two, all those nice experiences, that museum run which is reference to Band of Outsiders, the cinema which they adore cope with it as if nothing else matters, everything is just in a small circle, but when reality kicks in it's just the riots, politics and other things that's beyond Matthew's understanding or concern because he's not "one of them". So whether he loves Matthew or not he's still an outsider, he wouldn't understand the very French problems of that time, the politics, her shared traumas with Theo. Even Isabelle's behaviors suggest she doesn't have a understanding of a healthy relationship. Idk if Theo gone through the same mistreatment by their father in past, but there's definitely has been some sort of trauma to make the twins question the familial bond and break it apart by having sexual intimacy. Her brother, her incest relationship, her mischievous behavior, her father's weird touch on the back (that suggests a possibility of molesting in past) so again it's about her dysfunctional family and how she copes with it. He had eyes for Isabelle from the beginning, so he notices everything around her. Since Matthew is not interested in politics that much he doesn't dive into either. So I think "protesting" is the way of living, a lifestyle for young people there and in many other countries.īut instead of political issues itself the movie focuses more on how Matthew views the twins and their approach of life. Tbh when I lived in Paris for a year there were always some sort of riots, they love to protest something and question government. 60s were chaotic everywhere the Vietnam War influenced many riots in many countries. This protests was about workers wage, economy in general, against American imperialism. Firstly the protests were May 68, which almost overthrew the Gaulle government, and were a turning point for French near history.
